Bermudian Applicants Frequently Asked Questions

What jobs are available at your restaurants?

The restaurants have positions available in both the kitchen and the dining-room. These include busboys, waiters, bartenders and general assistants in the dining-room as well as chefs from commis to sous-chef and head-chef. There are porters responsible for cleaning the kitchen and dining-room. These all report to the overall manager. All these positions require working shift-hours

Are there any other positions?

Yes, in addition to the restaurants we have various take-out locations. These are L’Oriental Express and La Trattoria Shop as well as the two Airport Operations, La Trattoria Shop and Café Boulevard. All these outlets require counter-assistants. There are also cashiers at some of the restaurants such as La Trattoria working on day shifts or night-shifts.

Are there part-time positions?

Yes, on the waiting side there are many Bermudians who work for the catering division. They are on a list of qualified waiters and bar-tenders who work in the evenings at private functions outside the restaurants.

Is there any office work?

The Little Venice office helps provide administrative, accounting and human resource back-up for all the locations. Vacancies occur at intervals and are advertised in the local press.

How do I apply for employment?

You can download our application form from our web-site or obtain one from our office at 18 Reid Street, Hamilton. It can be submitted by post or by hand. It is best to submit your references at the same time.

Do you offer training?

All new staff attend an orientation given by our Director of Training, Leadership and Communication, the Hon Dale Butler JP MP. Subsequent to that each new employee attends on- the job training at the restaurants. Any employee who wishes to do more formal training at the Bermuda College would be considered for participation in their programmes.

Do you offer scholarships?

We have granted many scholarships over the years to students with a serious interest in pursuing a culinary career. These have been for programmes at the Bermuda College and also overseas. The student must have a commitment to the programme and maintain an adequate grade-point average. Any student interested in a career in the industry should approach us.

Do you have employment for summer students?

In 2007 we had 24 students working throughout the group. 4 of these worked in the office and the remainder in the restaurants in entry level positions in the kitchen and the dining room. Our summer programme is usually advertised in early spring but accept applications at any time. Just download an application and scan and send it back.

What health insurance coverage do you offer and what is the cost?

Your health insurance will cover you for the following:

  • Local health coverage: You will be covered for approximately 80% of all doctor’s visits, dental, and prescriptions. The remaining 20% will be paid by the employee at the time of service. All hospital fees will be paid in full.
  • Overseas health coverage: Full major medical coverage. Complete details of coverage will be given at time of sign up.
  • Life Insurance: The employee is covered under a life insurance policy for $50,000. This coverage is only available during the time of employment with the company and is cancelled immediately upon termination of employment.
  • You are entitled to 10 days paid sick leave per year after you have completed your 6 months probationary period.
  • If you have an accident resulting in an injury that causes you to be off work for a period of time, you will be covered for loss of wages under “accident coverage” up to 75% of your salary, provided it is covered by an original doctor/hospital certificate and you are not under the influence of alcohol or any illegal substances.
  • Social Insurance: This is a mandatory fund provided by the Bermuda Government for the purpose of retirement. The employer pays 50% and the employee pays 50%. This money is for your pension when you reach the age of 65. If you do not already have a social insurance number, you will be registered at sign in with the company and you will be sent a card with your personal social insurance number on it. This should be used for all correspondence in regard to your fund and for claiming the funds from the Bermuda Government when you reach the age of 65.

What will my deductions be?

  • Main deductions are as follows but are subject to change annually:
  • Health insurance: $41.92 per week (subject to annual increase)
  • Social Insurance/Government Pension: $26.80 per week (subject to annual increase)
  • Payroll Tax: $4.75% of total weekly wage (subject to change)
  • Other deductions may apply according to your individual contract.
  • Further information will be supplied to you upon arrival and sign up with our HR department.

Why do I need to have a bank account?

Our payroll system is set up for direct deposit to a bank account at either Bank of Bermuda or Bank of Butterfield. If you do not have a bank account, the employer will issue a reference letter so that you can open an account for payroll purposes. This must be done within the first week of employment. You will need a minimum $100 deposit to open an account.
